Teucrium fruticans, commonly known as Shrubby Germander, is a beautiful, hardy evergreen shrub prized for its stunning silvery-grey foliage, delicate lilac-blue flowers and naturally graceful, arching growth habit. Featuring soft, aromatic leaves with silvery-white undersides, this attractive Mediterranean shrub provides wonderful year-round colour, texture and contrast in the garden. Throughout the warmer months, masses of pretty, pale blue to lavender flowers appear amongst the foliage, creating a soft, elegant display that is particularly attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinators.

With its naturally bushy, spreading habit and distinctive silver foliage, Teucrium fruticans is an outstanding choice for informal hedging, garden borders, mass plantings and coastal landscapes. Its attractive foliage provides a beautiful contrast against darker green shrubs and colourful flowering perennials, making it particularly effective in Mediterranean-style gardens, waterwise landscapes and contemporary planting schemes. Equally impressive as a feature shrub or clipped into a neat, formal hedge, this versatile plant adds structure and interest to almost any garden setting.

Exceptionally hardy and wonderfully easy to grow, Teucrium fruticans thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, although it is adaptable to a wide range of soil types. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and performs exceptionally well in hot, dry and exposed conditions. Its excellent tolerance of coastal winds and salt-laden air makes it a reliable choice for seaside gardens and challenging planting positions.

Requiring very little maintenance, Teucrium fruticans responds beautifully to pruning and can be lightly trimmed after flowering to encourage dense, bushy growth and maintain the desired shape. Whether allowed to develop its naturally soft, arching form or regularly clipped into a structured hedge, this resilient shrub is a fantastic choice for gardeners wanting a beautiful, low-maintenance plant with striking silver foliage and delicate seasonal colour.
