Ideal for
These tropical, tuberous perennials are typically grown indoors or in sheltered outdoor positions, where they create a stunning display when in bloom.
Gloxinias prefer bright, indirect light and should be kept out of direct sunlight, which can scorch their soft leaves. Warm temperatures are essential, with an ideal range between 18 and 24°C. They are sensitive to the cold and should be protected from drafts and temperatures below 10°C. High humidity is also beneficial—placing the pot on a pebble tray or misting around (but not directly on) the plant helps maintain ideal conditions.
Gloxinia grows best in a lightweight, well-draining potting mix, similar to one used for African violets. When planting the tuber, position it just below the surface of the soil with the concave side facing upward. Good drainage is crucial to prevent waterlogging and potential tuber rot.
During the active growing and flowering season, the soil should be kept consistently moist but not soggy. Watering from the base or directly at the soil line is best, as wet foliage can lead to fungal problems. After flowering, as the plant begins to die back, gradually reduce watering to allow it to enter dormancy.
Feed the plant every two to four weeks during its growing season using a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Pause feeding when dormancy begins. Following the flowering period, the foliage will naturally yellow and die back—this is normal. At this stage, reduce watering and store the tuber in a cool, dry place with temperatures around 10 to 15°C.
When new growth appears in late Winter or early Spring, repot the tuber in fresh potting mix and resume watering and feeding. Remove spent flowers and yellowing leaves to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage continued blooming.
Gloxinias are relatively low-maintenance but can occasionally attract indoor pests such as aphids or mealybugs, which can be treated with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Powdery mildew or root rot may also occur if conditions are too damp or poorly ventilated.
With proper care, Gloxinia will reward you with a spectacular display of blooms and can continue to thrive year after year, provided the tuber is allowed to rest and regenerate between flowering cycles.
