Epimedium Mardi Gras

A charming groundcover, Epimedium Mardi Gras is an Australian bred hybrid that shows off delicately coloured mauve, pink and lemon flowers. Also known as Bishop's Hat or Barrenwort, Epimedium is an easy to grow perennial that features distinctive heart-shaped foliage and clusters of flowers that appear to float above the foliage in Spring.

An extremely undemanding plant, Epimedium will soon make a good-sized patch in any shaded spot, even dry shade, making it an excellent choice for those tricky spots in the garden. With its low-growing habit and spreading nature, this delightful plant is perfect for planting under trees, in woodland gardens, or between shrubs where it can thrive without competing for space with larger plants.

Epimedium prefers a position in partial to full shade in a well drained soil, however it is quite adaptable to all barring boggy soils. Minimal pruning or maintenance is required but for best results watering during dry spells is recommended. Foliage can be cut back in Winter so the flowers are more prominent, and the new foliage emerging as the flowers die back is an attractive sight.
