Chestnut

A fast-growing, long-lived, deciduous tree known for its abundant Autumn harvest of starchy nuts, the Chestnut is a handsome, spreading tree that produces shiny brown nuts encased in a green, prickly burr that splits open as the nuts ripen in Autumn. These delicious nuts can be roasted, boiled, or ground into flour, making the tree valuable for both culinary and practical purposes.

With a combination of ornamental appeal and edible yield, this elegant tree makes an excellent dual-purpose tree. Although commonly regarded as a cold-climate tree, this can also be successfully grown in subtropical regions provided it is planted in well-drained soil. Pollinated by wind, a single tree can produce a reasonable crop, but planting a second tree nearby will improve pollination and significantly increase nut yield.
