Carpinus Hornbeam

An attractive and versatile deciduous tree, Carpinus Hornbeam is underutilised in Australian landscapes but deserves far wider recognition. A popular choice in English gardens, this elegant tree offers year-round interest and a wide range of garden uses.

Hornbeam features finely pleated bright green foliage through the warmer months, which turns golden in cooler regions during Autumn. Uniquely, the foliage often persists through Winter, providing valuable seasonal screening—an uncommon trait among deciduous trees. In early Spring, yellow catkins emerge on bare branches, adding a subtle ornamental touch.

Highly adaptable and easy to maintain, Hornbeam can be clipped into a pleached hedge, shaped as topiary, trained as an espalier, or left to grow naturally as a stately specimen tree. Its tidy growth habit and elegant form make it suitable for both formal and informal garden designs.

Carpinus thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil. While it is drought-tolerant once established, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods will enhance growth. For best performance, fertilise at planting and again each Spring when new growth appears.
