Bougainvillea are tough, hardy scrambling shrubs that absolutely thrive in full sun. These spectacular climbers perform best in frost-free locations where they remain evergreen and can flower almost year-round. In cooler climates they may become deciduous, with their flowering season generally limited to summer. Versatile and eye-catching, they are ideal for growing in pots or for training to ramble over an arch or gazebo. When left unsupported, Bougainvillea will spread to form a dense groundcover, but with the right support they will climb vigorously and create a stunning vertical display.
Bougainvillea prefer well-drained soil and will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. A sandy or loamy soil enriched with a small amount of organic matter is ideal, and in heavier soils it’s beneficial to improve drainage with coarse sand or gravel before planting. When growing in pots, use a high-quality free-draining potting mix and ensure containers have excellent drainage holes to prevent root rot.
These plants actually prefer a little neglect and may reduce flowering if overwatered or overfed, so take care not to overwater during summer and fertilise sparingly. An autumn tidy-up will help keep plants in shape, though it’s wise to wear gloves as the shoots can be quite thorny, particularly the non-flowering water shoots, which are best pruned out.
