Ammocharis Longifolia

One of South Africa's showiest bulb species, Ammocharis Longifolia is a sight to behold when flowering en masse. Like so many of the Amaryllis family the fragrant flowers are borne on short stems from leafless bulbs in Summer, and the stunning lily like flowers open creamy white and age to a delightful pink making the flower heads a delightful multicoloured spectacle as the flowers open and age. During the Winter months foliage appears, with the curving foliage arranging a flattish rosette radiating from the large bulb. The leaves on this variety have a curious cutoff appearance at the tips.

Naturally occurring on sandy to gravelly river flats, Ammocharis requires a well drained sandy soil, and will withstand Summer droughts and low temperatures during the Winter months. This extremely tough bulb prefers a sunny position and will cope with wet conditions whilst dormant so long as the soil has good drainage. In areas with Summer rainfall Ammocharis may stay evergreen.

Ammocharis is suitable to be grown as a potted specimen, and will cope out in the garden in areas with a dry Summer. Select a sunny position in a well drained soil and ensure the neck of the bulb is planted a little above soil level.
