Purple Bliss™ Tomato
Exclusive first release
Grow Australia's first purple tomato
Purple from skin to centre. Sweet, juicy, and only available as plants from Garden Express.
Stock will be available from the 4th of November

Purple all the way through
Most purple tomatoes are only purple on the skin. Slice open a Purple Bliss and it's deep violet right to the centre.
Grows like any cherry tomato
Full sun, a stake and regular water. If you've grown a cherry tomato, you can grow Purple Bliss.
Rich in anthocyanins
Two genes from the edible snapdragon flower switch on anthocyanins, the same natural pigment that colours blueberries and blackberries.

Twenty years in the making
Purple Bliss was developed by UK plant scientist Professor Cathie Martin at the John Innes Centre. Her work focuses on making the foods we already eat more nutritious. The breeder, Norfolk Healthy Produce, has brought it from the lab to gardens and greengrocers.
It was approved in the US and Canada first. In 2026 it became one of the first genetically modified fresh foods approved in Australia, cleared by both Food Standards Australia New Zealand and the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator.
Now you can grow it in your own backyard, and Garden Express is the only place to get the plants.

Ready to plant
Your Purple Bliss arrives as a healthy young plant in an 8 cm biodegradable jiffy pot. There's nothing to remove. Plant it straight into the garden or a large pot, and the roots grow right through it.
Plants arrive from 4 November, just after Melbourne Cup Day, long seen as a great reminder that it's time to start planting tomatoes.

Quick questions
Is Purple Bliss genetically modified?
Yes. It contains two genes from the edible snapdragon flower, which boost anthocyanins, the natural purple pigment. It has been assessed and approved by FSANZ and the OGTR.
What does it taste like?
Like a sweet, juicy cherry tomato. It just looks very different.
When will my plants arrive?
Plants go on sale and dispatch from 4 November 2026. Stock is limited.
Can I get it in Tasmania or WA?
Unfortunately not. Tasmania's GM moratorium and WA's quarantine rules mean we can't send plants to those states.
