Brugmansia Growing Guide
What is Brugmansia?
Brugmansia (Brugmansia spp.) also known as Angels Trumpet or Devils Trumpet is a long lived woody perennial. It is part of the Solanaceae family and is native to Central and South America. This evergreen shrub or small tree has an open habit. It is covered with slightly hairy mid-green leaves that are generally large and broad, with a toothed margin. Known for their large upside down trumpet shaped, tubular flowers which come in a variety of colours such as white, yellow, peach, orange, pink and gold. They will flower from Spring through to Summer in colder climates while in warmer climates they will flower for most of the year. The flowers of Brugmansia are sweetly scented at night and are pollinated by moths. Brugmansia prefer a semi shaded position that gets morning sun. Flowers will tend to fade in full sun and foliage can burn during hot spells so avoid a middle of the day full sun location. Keep protected from severe frosts. Handling Brugmansia is completely safe. Although all parts of the plant are very toxic if eaten. Care should be taken with children and animals around the plants.

Brugmansia are easy to grow plants and don’t require much care. They have high ornamental value with lush foliage and masses of highly fragrant flowers that bloom for months on end. They are ideal for pots, under trees and shaded areas. If you live in a cold climate, growing your Brugmansia in pots means you can easily protect them from harsh frosts. This plant is great in cool temperate gardens for a slightly tropical feel and looks very much at home in the tropics.

Soil Preparation
They like moist fertile well-drained soil. Soils can be improved by adding well broken down animal manures and compost.
How To Plant Brugmansia
Plant in semi shade, 2m apart with the plant crown at soil level.
Semi-Shade is the preferred location. They can tolerate full morning or late afternoon sun.
Brugmansia Plant Care
Keep well watered during the growing season. Keep moist but not waterlogged.
Brugmansia are heavy feeders and will produce more flowers with better fragrance if they are well fed. Use a complete fertiliser at the start of the growing season and use a well broken down compost to improve the soil fertility.
Prune well in Winter to keep a compact shape. They can be pruned and train to a “standard” shape to encourage a top growing habit. Prune plants after flowering has finished.
Leaf chewing caterpillars, thrips and aphids are the most common pests. Treat with your preferred pest control solution. Watch out for snail.
