Thriving in warm, tropical climates, this variety prefers a protected, sunny position with free-draining soil. It can also be successfully grown in an extremely large pot using a cactus and succulent potting mix. As a sprawling and vigorous grower, it requires staking onto a sturdy post or frame, making it ideal for adding vertical interest to the garden.
Dragon fruit can be propagated from either seed or cuttings, though cuttings are strongly preferred, as they establish more quickly and can begin fruiting within one to two years. Seeds, while viable, can take several years to produce fruit. When planting cuttings, allow the cut end to callous over for a few days before placing it into soil to prevent rot.
Water deeply but only when the top few centimeters of soil feel dry, and take care not to overwater—excess moisture can lead to root rot. Feed monthly during the active growing season with a balanced fertiliser or one specifically designed for cacti, and reduce feeding in the cooler months when growth slows.
The large, white flowers open at night and are short-lived. Although the plants are self fertile, they often require hand-pollination to ensure fruit set, depending on the variety. Once pollinated, fruit usually matures within 30 to 50 days. Regular pruning helps maintain shape, improve airflow, and encourage strong, healthy growth. Be on the lookout for common pests like mealybugs, snails, and ants, and monitor for signs of stem rot or fungal infections—especially in humid conditions.
With the right care and support, Dragon Fruit can be a stunning and productive addition to your garden or patio, rewarding growers with both dramatic blooms and uniquely beautiful fruit.
