Commonly known as a Pincushion Protea, Leucospermum cordifolium brings bold colour, texture and architectural interest to the garden. Its unique flowers are highly attractive to bees and nectar-feeding birds, while the dense evergreen foliage provides year-round appeal.
Ideal for growing in garden beds, pots and feature containers, this hardy shrub performs best in a full sun to part shade position and requires a well-drained soil. When growing in pots, use a quality Australian native potting mix and ensure excellent drainage, as Proteaceae plants dislike waterlogged conditions.
Once established, Leucospermum cordifolium is both drought tolerant and light frost tolerant, making it a reliable and low-maintenance choice for a wide range of Australian climates. Regular watering during establishment and occasional feeding with a low-phosphorus native plant fertiliser will encourage healthy growth and prolific flowering.
Whether planted as a feature specimen, incorporated into a native garden or grown for its outstanding cut flowers, Leucospermum cordifolium delivers a stunning display of colour and is a rewarding addition to any landscape.
