Conifer Lemon Cypress

Conifer Lemon Cypress is a smaller growing evergreen Conifer known for its striking golden-yellow foliage and refreshing lemon scent, particularly noticeable when the foliage is rubbed or warmed by the sun. It is a cultivar of the Monterey Cypress, native to California, but widely cultivated in ornamental gardens around the world.

A small tree that typically grows in a narrow, upright, conical form, Lemon Cypress makes a great living Christmas Tree and can be brought inside for long periods of time. Its soft, feathery foliage maintains a vibrant lime to yellow color throughout the year, with the brightest color in full sun. The scent is one of its standout features—clean and citrusy—making it a popular choice for sensory gardens and outdoor living areas.

Conifer Lemon Cypress prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soils. It is drought-tolerant once established, but benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry spells, especially in the first couple of years after planting. It is frost hardy once established and is suitable for a range of temperate to warm climates.

This cultivar is often used as a feature plant in containers, clipped into formal shapes for topiary, or planted as a low hedge or screen. It responds well to light pruning and shaping, which also helps maintain dense growth.

While it can tolerate a variety of soil types, poor drainage should be avoided, as excessive moisture around the roots can cause rot.
