Japanese Box (Buxus japonica) is a beautiful, hardy evergreen shrub renowned for its lush, glossy dark green foliage and naturally dense, compact growth habit. Featuring small, attractive oval leaves and excellent tolerance to regular clipping, this versatile shrub is one of the most popular choices for creating neat, formal hedges, garden borders and decorative topiary. Particularly well suited to warmer climates, Japanese Box offers superior heat tolerance compared to many other Buxus varieties, making it an outstanding choice for Australian gardens.

Perfect for formal hedging, garden edging, pathway borders, topiary and structured landscaping, Japanese Box creates a timeless, elegant appearance in both traditional and contemporary gardens. Its naturally bushy growth habit responds beautifully to regular trimming, allowing it to be shaped into crisp, uniform hedges, rounded balls or decorative topiary features. Equally attractive in decorative pots and containers, Japanese Box makes a wonderful addition to patios, courtyards, entranceways and outdoor entertaining areas. For a dense, continuous hedge, we recommend planting approximately 40cm apart. Under favourable growing conditions, plants can reach approximately 1 metre tall and 70cm wide within 3 years.
Exceptionally hardy and easy to grow, Japanese Box thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Heat tolerant, shade tolerant and requiring little water once established, this reliable evergreen is an excellent choice for low-maintenance hedging and landscaping. For best results, fertilise during Spring and trim regularly throughout the growing season to encourage dense, compact growth and maintain the desired shape and size.
Please Note: Young Buxus plants may occasionally develop bronze, copper or autumn-toned foliage during particularly cold Winters. This is a normal response to cold weather, especially when chilly nights are followed by bright sunny days or cold winds. The discolouration is generally temporary, with plants returning to their attractive dark green colour as temperatures warm in Spring. Maintaining healthy soil conditions and applying a suitable all-purpose fertiliser in early Spring will help encourage fresh, healthy growth. Where soil conditions require it, an Autumn application of Dolomite lime may also be beneficial.
