Arum Lily Dragon

A true conversation piece—dark, mysterious, and completely unforgettable, the Dragon Arum, also known as the Voodoo Lily or Snake Lily, is a dramatic and exotic-looking plant native to the Mediterranean region. It is best known for its large, striking flower—a deep maroon to almost black spathe (a sheath-like bract) that can reach 26–30 cm in height. Rising from its centre is a tall, slender, blackish-purple spadix, which resembles a snake or a dark spike, adding to its mysterious allure.

This plant is not just visually bold—it’s also famous (or infamous) for its strong, unpleasant smell, often compared to rotting meat. This scent, which usually lasts for just a day or two, is designed to attract flies for pollination. Despite the odour, the Dragon Arum is a favourite among plant collectors and lovers of the unusual, thanks to its gothic beauty and architectural presence.

It has deeply divided green leaves with striking silvery flecks, adding to its ornamental value. The plant typically flowers in late Spring to early Summer and goes dormant in late Summer.

While the Dragon Arum may look exotic, it's relatively easy to grow in the right conditions—preferring well-drained soil, a sunny to partly shaded position, and protection from frost and strong winds. It also does well in large pots or containers, making it suitable for gardens with limited space.
